A Festival of Victorian Photography - Saturday 2nd to Friday 29th July 2011...
Visit ArtsBank and see Saltburn through a Victorian lens.
This year Saltburn celebrates its 150th birthday. To mark this special milestone, local photographer Charles Twist has organised A Festival of Victorian Photography.
From 2nd - 29th July, ArtsBank will host an exhibition of modern photographs of Saltburn taken using Victorian methods.
The exhibition is the work of the UK Large Format Photography Group, who convened in Saltburn for one weekend in April to capture the contemporary town with vintage cameras and lenses. As well as the work of Charles Twist, who shot his images on black and white film, the exhibition will include photographs by John Brewer, Marizu Okereke, Tony Richards and Graham Vasey.
The use of Victorian lenses gives the photographs a very distinctive feel. Features of the modern world are shown in a surprising new light which makes them look as if they have been pulled straight from the pages of a history book. We are so used to the crisp imagery produced by modern digital photography that seeing photographs produced using the imperfect methods of the Victorians is an intriguing novelty. The photographs have an evocative and sometimes eerie beauty which reminds us that Saltburn’s Victorian past is all around us.
The exhibition will be introduced with a talk by Victorian photography expert John Brewer. Please see our events page for more details.
