Born in Berwick upon Tweed in 1978, Joanne grew up in the beautiful Northumbrian countryside. After leaving school, she obtained an Honours Degree in Printed Textile Design from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.  Today she is a professional artist based at the Mushroom Works studios in Newcastle.

Joanne began her career designing imagery for Hawaiian shirts, children’s furnishing fabrics and greetings cards, selling work in Europe and the U.S.A.  This design background and experience with textiles has led to the development of her current work as an independent artist.

Her subjects are inspired by the British environment that she loves. Views of small coastal harbour villages, rustic rural settings and the animals that inhabit this wondrous landscape are all a feast for her imagination.  She thrives on capturing their character and aims to portray their personality through the development of her sketchbook drawings into colourful and quirky works of art.

The process of making her pieces evolves from using a combination of techniques including paint, collage, stitch and printmaking to produce art work rich with textured surfaces, hidden layers and splashes of colour.
